Necessity is the Mother of Invention: The Story Behind Altitude Water’s Disaster Relief Innovations

At Altitude Water, we pride ourselves on constantly evolving to meet the challenges we face in disaster relief and beyond. This is the story of how necessity and hands-on experience inspired the design of our current Disaster Relief Trailer and two innovative new products.

Centralizing Our Progress

In 2025, one of our primary goals is to consolidate our media into a single, accessible location. While working on this project, I rediscovered videos that capture Altitude Water’s journey. These clips vividly showcase how we operate, why we lead in the air-to-water industry, and how we’ve expanded into water purification. They also illustrate the lessons we’ve learned from being on the ground during disasters.

Listening and Learning on the Ground

You’ve heard the saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Nowhere is this more evident than in our disaster relief work. Over the years, we’ve learned that the best way to understand the needs of disaster-affected communities is by actively listening to residents and first responders.

During our time in Maui helping with wildfire recovery, the Altitude team not only built a Disaster Relief Trailer for Noah’s Arc but also:

  1. Attended FEMA meetings to hear community concerns.
  2. Built solar arrays to support the local power grid.
  3. Installed reverse osmosis systems to deliver clean water.
  4. Distributed Brita water filters to those in need.
  5. Participated in disaster response workshops.

While it’s easy to focus on immediate relief, each disaster offers a unique opportunity to learn and improve. Whether it’s attending late-night community meetings or troubleshooting on the fly, we see every challenge as a chance to refine our approach. We know the team would rather get some sleep after a long day working on relief but we also knew we could learn a lot listening to different perspectives.

Adapting Through Experience

Each disaster presents its own complexities, and every interaction adds to our understanding. For instance, during the Hurricane Helene response and subsequent deployments in both Florida and North Carolina, we realized two critical factors:

  1. Communication is essential. Reliable internet connectivity can make or break relief efforts.
  2. Communities need more than just pure drinking water. Large quantities of water for cleaning, cooking, and hygiene are equally critical.

Innovating Through Collaboration

In January 2024, during our third trip to assist with the Maui wildfires, we attended a solar conference in Waikiki hosted by our partner, Footprint Project. This workshop was transformative. It brought together first responders, residents, and nonprofits to evaluate disaster response strategies, prompting us to reimagine our Disaster Relief Trailers.

This post highlights Altitude Water’s commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and community impact. Together, we can meet the challenges of tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow and evolve.

The feedback and insights gathered during the workshop, combined with our hands-on experience, led to two significant upgrades for our trailers:

1.Enhanced Communication Capabilities: We added Starlink satellite connectivity to provide reliable internet access, simplifying communication without incurring unnecessary costs.

2.Advanced Water Purification Systems: Recognizing the need for water beyond drinking, we developed a new ozone purification system. This addition allows our trailers to purify external water sources for uses like showering, cleaning, and cooking.

These upgrades debuted in our South Florida Disaster Relief Trailer in April 2024 and have since set a new standard for our disaster response.

Expanding Our Vision

The lessons learned and innovations developed during these deployments have propelled us beyond being solely an air-to-water company. Today, Altitude Water is a diversified water solutions provider, meeting the varied needs of communities in crisis.

As we reflect on the journey that led to these advancements, it’s clear that looking back has been essential to moving forward. Each disaster, every meeting, and all the stories shared have shaped who we are—and who we strive to become.

A Future of Innovation

Our commitment to innovation doesn’t stop here. The two new products inspired by these efforts are nearly ready for market. They represent our dedication to evolving alongside the challenges we face and ensuring we’re always ready to serve communities in need.

At Altitude Water, necessity isn’t just the mother of invention—it’s the foundation of our mission to provide clean, safe water wherever it’s needed most.

What a long strange trip it’s been

Been a long time since I last blogged.  What a year it’s been- so much accomplished yet so much to do.

Accomplishments-

1. Developed the state-of-the-art Disaster Relief Trailer and tested it during Hurricane Helene.

2. Developed 2 new purification boxes using our patented ozone purification system.

    1. One larger commercial scale for Disaster Relief Trailers and rainwater capture. 1,500 gallons/day
    2. One for personal recreational use- boats and RVs.

3. Completed Stage 1 of Cameroon Maka project and got all systems operational-

    1. Purification of rainwater
    2. Purification of rainwater
    3. Hooked up the first T200 to solar and prove technology. T200 making 44 liters/hour during dry season.
    4. Opened a learning center and water distribution center.

4. Integrated new suppliers, including new metal fabricator that enable quick expansion.

5. Completed Amy Grant project cleaning well water from the sulfur.

6. Completed water distribution for Tierra Bomba School in Colombia.  We are now making 45 gallons/day.

Tierra Bomba School in Colombia

7 . Developed new high Alkaline filter system to get 10 ph from T12

8. Opened 2 new markets- Colombia and Costa Rica.

9. Still have two Disaster Relief trailers operating on Maui providing water for homeless and relief workers.

10. Filmed our first made for TV (Discovery Channel) story on the Fish Guyz- Lures to Legends as well as NBC and Fox news stories.

11. COO Voted top 100 Innovator and Entrepreneur by Top 100 Magazine (OK technically that was released on Jan 1 but we knew beforehand and found out he will be on the cover).

OK This list goes to 11.  “Why don’t you make 10 Louder?”  But this list goes to 11  (I regress to my Spinal Tap days in college- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xgx4k83zzc Our lists go to 11)

And while we might not have blogged, we had numerous articles posted on us and numerous podcasts that were released

Water Conditioning & Purification Magazine

That’s a full year.  A lot of goals were met that started over a decade and three years ago (Amy Grant Farm and Cameroon) have been completed with outstanding results.  This has not been easy as these were huge undertakings and the first ones of its size for Altitude.

But  as Maui and Asheville showed us- there is still a lot of work to be done.

Our goals for 2025-

1. Be properly capitalized to be able to help educate the public of this life and environment saving technology.

    1. Have stock to rent trailers during disasters.
    2. Integrate new purification systems
    3. Bring on executive staff to help in the growth.
    4. Economies of scale purchasing

2. Streamline production runs and add assemblers.

3. Integrate our metal shop into subassembly- find suppliers for wire harnesses and make mold for water tank.

4. Get on Joe Rogan podcast.

5. Find right partners for:

    1. Middle East
    2. South America- set up assembly there

6. Open water bottling facility

7. Get 40 Disaster Relief trailers sold.

We do things differently- it’s not 7-11 but 11-7.  We know some of these goals are far reaching (the Joe Rogan podcast for example but we believe in dreaming big.

We also dream of transforming lives through our technology and doing effective charity projects.

We could use your help.  Something as dimple as subscribing to our YouTube page or liking our social media posts (sharing them is even better and I think 1 more click).  This gets us out there in an inexpensive way.

Remember Stay Hydrated my friends.
